Recycled Slate Bathroom
Landfill Avoided, Contemporary Bathroom Created
This design was originally created for our owner’s home, but an interested client provided David Aichinger Tile Company the opportunity to run with my idea on their project. Several months prior to the project we had accumulated a large amount of slate from a pool table company that was intending on demolishing the material, ultimately sending it to landfills. Enough material was aquired to create every every facet of this bathroom, a nd then some.
One of the focal points of this project is the completely black slate sink. In order to build the bowl layered slabs of slate had to be designed by template, fused with adhesive and polished to perfection. The process was time consuming, but the result was well worth the effort. After completing the sink, it was set aside and work on the rest of the bathroom commenced.
To add contrast we chose a ceramic tile with the appearance of limestone to complement the pool table slate. The ceramic tile also provided easy maintenance. Accents of black slate were polished and inlayed through the room’s floor and shower wall. Lastly, the slate was incorporated In the showers ledge.
For the final details of the bathroom the designer chose plumbing fixtures with a modern flair. We were limited in our choices for the faucet given the height of the sink but we found one that worked perfectly and selected all of the coordinating fixtures for the rest of the bathroom needs. We also played off all of the lines in slate with the design of the mirror and with the picture frames in the background.
Would you have ever guessed by looking at this picture that at one point you may have played a game of pool on one of those pieces of slate?
